When anyone uploads a subscriber list into Revue, our system performs a ‘health check’ on that list. This means we check the email addresses to make sure they’re still valid (which we explain below).

If too many emails are sent to invalid email addresses, this can negatively impact our email reputation, which would mean more emails from Revue would be delivered to spam folders, or blocked by spam filters entirely.

If we are unable to import the list due to too many invalid email addresses, all you have to do is clean and re-upload your list. Here’s how to do that:

  1. If you are exporting your list from a CRM or another newsletter service, we recommend exporting only your engaged subscribers. A list with a high proportion of disengaged subscribers will have low open rates, sending the signal to Internet service providers that people don’t want your emails. Other platforms and CRMs often offer the functionality to export active subscriber segments. This might mean you’re importing a smaller list, but it will contain a higher proportion of engaged subscribers, improving your deliverability.

If this isn’t possible, you may wish to use an external list-cleaning service to help you generate a list of valid email addresses, only. Note: These external services are unrelated to Twitter and may charge a fee to clean your list. Your use of any such service is subject to their Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

  2. Download that list of engaged or valid email addresses as a CSV file.

  3. Make sure it’s in the correct format for importing to Revue. Open the CSV file in Excel or Google Sheets, then delete all columns other than “email, first name, last name”. Delete the headers as well. Save the CSV file.

  4. Come back to Revue, go to the Subscribers page, and import your cleaned list.

As a reminder, it is your responsibility to ensure that every email address you upload has been obtained with legally required and fair consent. What this means may vary by where your readers are located. Once your list has been successfully imported, we may ask you for some additional information and will let you know whether the re-uploaded list has passed the health-check.

We’re aware any delays to getting going can cause frustration — we get it, you just want to start sending! — but it’s worth it to keep your newsletters reaching your readers. That’s a win for you, and win for everyone else on Revue. ✨

FAQ

What are invalid email addresses?

Email addresses can be invalid if they contain a typo, are in an incorrect format, or are out of use. For example, if one of your subscribers gets a new email address, their old one (the one on your list) would become invalid.

Even if you have meticulously collected consent from all of your subscribers, it’s likely that over time a number of those email addresses will become invalid.

Why can’t invalid email addresses be uploaded to Revue?

We work hard to maintain Revue’s email reputation. This is important because we want to make sure your emails (and those of other customers) are delivered to subscribers' inboxes.

If too many emails are sent to invalid email addresses, this can negatively impact our email reputation, which would mean more emails from Revue would be delivered to spam folders, or blocked by spam filters entirely.
